For 80 years the World Service has been broadcasting news, music, drama and opinion around the world. Eight decades of sharing truth, amplifying voices and facilitating connections between people, countries and continents. International communication, after all, fosters international relations.
Listeners tune in to crackling radios in remote outposts, tormented by mosquitos, tanks or mother-in-laws. Others plug in headphones in glossy internet lounges or gaze at the millpond-flat screens of gargantuan TVs or tiny iPods. Meal-weary mothers, inky students and forward-thinking executives all twist their DAB dials to find universal insight and entertainment that is simultaneously spewed into every corner of our planet.
Every single corner. Now that is quite something.
Here at SporkTalk, we offer a slightly scaled down service. Yes, we’re global – but this blog isn’t just about broadcasting. It’s about about finding and featuring voices from around the world. Voices that tell us something about their origin – through stories, poetry, folklore and fables.
Once the World Service has spoken, what do those distant voices whisper back?
